David Thorne Scott

David Thorne Scott is a singer and instrumentalist who performs in jazz, pop, and classical styles. He is also a composer, arranger, bandleader and teacher.

His jazz album "Shade" was chosen as a Top 5 CD by the Jazz Education Journal. Cadence Magazine says "he phrases like a saxophone player and is as slippery and hip as the young Mel Tormé."

David has performed as a vocal soloist with large ensembles like the Boston Pops, the Capital Jazz Orchestra and the Melrose Symphony.

The Vintage Vocal Quartet is David’s current project, in which he plays bass and sings music of the big band era. He is a founding member of the L.A.-based vocal quintet Vocalogy, which recorded two albums featuring his arrangements, published by Hal Leonard and SMP Music. As a member of the vocal quartet Syncopation, called "a 21st-century Manhattan Transfer or Lambert, Hendricks and Ross‚" by the Boston Globe, he sang and played trumpet with the Boston Pops on the 4th of July.

The legendary vocal group the Four Freshmen has only had four different lead singers since its inception in 1947 and David is the only substitute ever to tour with them, singing lead and playing bass.

The pop/jazz crossover album "Hopeful Romantic” consists of all new material and showcases David’s energetic singing and piano playing. Gold- and Platinum-award winner Anthony Resta (Duran Duran, Collective Soul) produced the CD. His composition “I See You” was featured in the television show The Blacklist on NBC.

David performs with pianist/singer Mark Shilansky as DYAD, a freewheeling duo act performing originals, jazz, and creative interpretations of 1980s pop music.

Classical ensembles such as Blue Heron and Cut Circle have called upon David as a singer of Renaissance music and oratorio.

David is Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music, where he has taught voice, improvisation, ensembles, and vocal arranging for 15 years. He is the director of Berklee’s summer program Vocal Summit and an active clinician.
