  • Dave and Mark perform together in different musical situations, but one they particularly enjoy is the duo format. They blow up audience expectations of "a singer plus an accompanist" by incorporating vocal harmony as well as additional instruments such as percussion, bass and trumpet. They view varied musical styles — including classical, folk, theater, the Beatles, and (of course) 80’s pop music — through a jazz lens.

  • SWINGING HARMONIES OF THE BIG BAND ERA
The 1930s and 1940s hit the sweet spot when swing music, jazz music, and pop music were all one and the same. It was a time when every radio blared out music that was danceable yet sophisticated.
The Vintage Vocal Quartet is dialed in to the sound of groups like Glenn Miller’s Modernaires, the Nat King Cole Trio, the Andrews Sisters, and Tommy Dorsey’s Pied Pipers, as well as singers like Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Jo Stafford.
These four vocalists double on piano, bass, guitar and trumpet, so you’ll hear the full, rich style of the big band era in a tight little package.
The VVQ has been delighting concert audiences, lindy hoppers, and swanky private events all over New England. Bring your dancing shoes and get ready to swing!

Re-creating the role of The Modernaires will be the acclaimed vocal group More than Four while Dave Scott and Liz Saunders will perform the roles of Ray Eberle and Marion Hutton. In addition to iconic songs like “Chatanooga Choo-Choo,” “Kalamazoo,” and “In the Mood,” great dances from the 1940s will be performed by the talented dancers of The New England School of Dance.

  • After months of exhilarating work, the new CD is finished! "Hopeful Romantic" is a jazz/pop mixture of original songs that is unique. Some early feedback has compared it to Jamie Cullum or Donald Fagan. There will be a CD release party April 12 at Ryles Jazz Club in Inman Square. Come celebrate with us and buy a copy of the CD. If you love the music, please support us by buying additional copies for your friends. Thursday, April 12 Ryles Jazz Club 8:30 p.m.-midnight $12 212 Hampshire Street Cambridge, MA http://www.ryles.com/event.cfm?event_id=6280 This night will be an epic three sets. Set 1 will be music from "DYAD", my 2007 recording of duets with the utterly original pianist Mark Shilansky. Set 2 will be music from the new CD, "Hopeful Romantic." I'll be playing piano and keyboards, while Eric Byers (guitar), Phil McGowan (drums) and Greg Loughman (acoustic bass) will be rocking out and singing background vocals. Set 3 will be all of the above musicians plus a special guest or two in an all-star jazz session. If you're there until midnight, you can sing Happy Birthday to me in four-part harmony. The best birthday present you could give is just coming to the show. I'd love to see every one of you at Ryles on April 12. It will be a night that we won't soon forget.

  • Singer and pianist David Thorne Scott brings new material, a new band, and a new format to you.  Renowned across New England as a jazz singer and member of the group Syncopation, David has performed at the area's top jazz clubs and has sung with the Boston Pops.  As a classical singer he has performed with the groundbreaking Blue Heron renaissance choir, which the New Yorker lauds for "expressive intensity" and a "quiver of passion".   Now you can see a different side.  He's got a new book of slick original songs in a groovy pop-jazz style, he's got a hot young band, and he's singing from the piano.  This summer David heads into the studio for a collaboration with a multi-platinum award winning producer to bring his original songs to a wider audience.  Cadence Magazine says David "phrases like a saxophone player and is as slippery and hip as a young Mel Tormé".  Catch this group while you can! Last time we played there our hearts were melted by the beautiful people who came to hear us. You really don't want to miss this one if you can help it.

  • My first love, as you all know, is singing jazz, and tomorrow I will be performing at Ryles Jazz Club with some of my favorite musicians. Christine Fawson will be singing and playing trumpet, Mark Shilansky will play piano, Greg Holt will be on acoustic bass, and Steve Langone will be manning the drumkit. This will be a show comprised largely of standards. Christine and I feel like old souls when we get together and talk about the great songs by Gershwin, Porter, Kern and the other masters of 20th-century music. We get a little misty-eyed when we think of the musicians who created this style before we were born. So we decided to devote an evening to them. No fusion, no pop crossover, no too-hip-for-the-room arrangements, just quality swingtime. (Okay, maybe we'll throw in a bossa or two to mix things up a little.) This IS your grandfathers jazz show. Please come join us, won't you? And be kind to the bartenders-- they can make an old-fashioned, you know.

  • VOCALOGY is a vocal jazz quintet which brings an exciting and distinctive sound to the world of vocal music. Vocalogy has delighted audiences internationally in festivals, concerts, clinics and clubs since the groups formation in 1998. Christine Guter (Helferich) is the group's dynamic lead singer; tenors David Thorne Scott and John Knutson, baritone Gerhard Guter, and bass Chris Morey provide rock-solid harmonies and take outstanding solo features. The group utilizes its range of five-and-a-half octaves to execute intricate and vocally demanding material in a way that seems effortless. They thrill audiences with their improvised solos, tight ensemble work, and dazzling harmonies. Vocalogy arose from an artist-in-residency program under Grammy-Award nominee Phil Mattson. Now self-directed, Vocalogy performs a collection of their own innovative arrangements.

This is a venue reminding one of a cool underground art space in Greenwich Village where you can hear new music that is challenging and emotional. I'm not sure what I'm going to be doing for this show. The details will come together in June, but suffice it to say that you will hear me do somethings you've never heard me do before, and MAYBE you've never heard ANYONE do before. Stay tuned.

About the Masterworks Chorale Summer Sings: Established in 1969, Masterworks Chorale’s Summer Sing program is the most extensive program of its kind in New England. Summer Sing is an eight-week program that gives the audience — consisting of both amateur and professional singers — the opportunity to perform a different masterpiece of the choral repertoire each week, working under the direction of Conductor Steven Karidoyanes and selected guest conductors, and with professional soloists. Admission is kept at an affordable $10, and several hundred singers from around the Boston area come each week, many of whom have been participating for years. In addition to the singing and learning opportunities enjoyed by the audience members, Summer Sing has also provided performance opportunities to many young soloists, a number of whom have gone on to professional singing careers.

  • Deriving its name from 15th-century music notation, Cut Circle is an esteemed vocal octet specializing in Renaissance music. Founded and led by the Stanford Music faculty’s own Jesse Rodin, the ensemble has been called “the most promising group I have heard in a long time” by no less an authority than Donald Greig of the Tallis Scholars and the Orlando Consort. In this performance, Cut Circle explores the work of 15th-century Franco-Flemish master Johannes Ockeghem, a composer equally renowned in his day for technical brilliance and extraordinary expressiveness. http://www.cutcircle.com/
